Beginning March 15, the second phase of the planned chilled water outage will go into effect, supporting the ongoing effort of implementing operational resiliency for the entire campus. Additional chilled water system valves will be replaced, or new ones installed, during the week of spring break.
Georgia Tech’s chilled water system has performed well for decades, providing cool, conditioned air for campus buildings. However, the aged system is experiencing operational issues that, if not addressed, could lead to a potential unplanned outage for the entire campus and significantly affect Institute operations.
Without an operational chilled water system, campus buildings cannot be cooled, causing discomfort for building occupants, especially in the warm weather months. More importantly, lack of cooling would affect the Institute’s research and academic mission since much of the work conducted and equipment used in laboratories and data storage must be temperature controlled throughout the year.
This next phase will allow technicians in the future to shut off the valves to isolate problem areas and service sections of the campus chilled water infrastructure with fewer interruptions to the entire system.
“Each completed chilled water project phase will improve resiliency and reliability of the system. Over time, we will be able to reduce both the size and impact on chilled water outages to each customer,” said Jim Stephens, interim vice president for Infrastructure and Sustainability.
Building lists and a color-coded map of this second phase of planned outage (see image) have been shared with building managers. Communication with building managers about the project's progress will be ongoing throughout the improvement period, March 15 – 20.
Buildings in red: Outage planned March 15 – 20.
Buildings in blue: No outage planned at this time.
Additionally, shorter weekend outages are planned for March 30 – 31 and April 6 –7.
